Location
Lawrenceville is only 19 miles from downtown Atlanta. It is located northeast of Atlanta with Interstate 85 north as the west boundary, Hwy. 29 as the southern boundary, and Hwy. 124 as the eastern boundary. It is bordered by Duluth, Suwanee, and Buford to the West and North, Dacula to the East, and Grayson and Snellville to the South.

History
Lawrenceville is the second oldest city in the Metro Atlanta area. Lawrenceville was incorporated on December 15, 1821. The city is named after Captain James Lawrence, a naval commander during the War of 1812. Lawrence is known today for his command "Don't give up the ship!"

Downtown Lawrenceville is rich in historically significant buildings. These include the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse and the Lawrenceville Female Seminary.
The Gwinnett Historic Courthouse foundation was constructed in 1885. It won first place in Historic Preservation in the American Society of Interior Designers, and it has been recognized as one of the most carefully revitalized courthouses in Georgia. The Courthouse stands in downtown Lawrenceville as one of the county’s most significant historic buildings.
War memorials dot the grounds of the majestic Courthouse, and the second floor houses the Gwinnett Historical Society.
The Female Seminary was originally built in 1837. Today, this structure is home to the Gwinnett County Museum. The seminary is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Also downtown are various landmarks and antique locations. While downtown, relax in one of several parks, such as Bethesda Park, Collins Hill Park, Rhodes Jordan Park, and Ronald Reagan Park. Enjoy a great game of golf at the public Collins Hill Golf Club or the private Northwood Country Club.
In 2005, the city of Lawrenceville entered into a unique partnership with the Aurora Theater, which relocated to Lawrenceville. The Gwinnett County Courthouse steps were the site of publisher Larry Flynt’s trial and shooting, featured in the movie The People vs. Larry Flynt.
